Almost all cultivated carrots before the 16th century were purple in colour, with yellow and white carrots rarely appearing in mutant varieties. The Dutch farmers once found out that crossbreeding the yellow and white carrots produced orange carrots which were easier to grow. From then onwards, the crossbred orange carrot eventually became the common species across the globe.
